Two libraries for building whole business systems.

Code Clubs develops velocity-python and velocity-react: a data layer that creates its own schema, and an application layer that builds screens from a description of the data. Both are MIT licensed.

How they fit together

How the two libraries fit together A browser app built with velocity-react sends structured requests over HTTPS to an API function built with velocity-python, which reads and writes PostgreSQL. Work that takes longer goes through a queue to a worker, also built with velocity-python. velocity-reactscreens, forms and gridsbuilt from metadata velocity-pythonAPI function: actions, safety checks, transactions PostgreSQLschema follows the data Work queuesent only after commit velocity-pythonworker: one transaction a job HTTPS
Both halves speak one data contract: tables by name, rows as plain objects, filters as structured data, never SQL from the browser.

Where they came from

The design of the data layer goes back to the early 2000s: a layer that creates its own schema, so a change to an application is a change and not a database project. It grew with the cloud, then was rebuilt from 2019 on for serverless and asynchronous systems. The current velocity-python has been on the Python Package Index since January 2024, and velocity-react followed in 2026 as its front-end half.

A hobbyist writes code that runs once, for themselves. A professional writes code that keeps running for people they'll never meet. These projects are where we practice the second kind.

Why does a nonprofit develop business software?

Because real software is the best teacher. The libraries run systems that people depend on every day, so the code has to be tested, documented and kept running. That makes it the kind of code students and volunteers learn the most from.

Can I use them in my own project?

Yes. Both are released under the MIT License, which lets you use, change and redistribute them, including in commercial software.

Who uses them?

They run business systems in production, including Porto from Point of Truth Systems, which describes its data layer by linking here.
